Mystery death as horrified Brit holidaymakers discover woman’s decomposing body floating off Majorca

POLICE in Majorca are investigating the death of a woman whose decomposing body was spotted floating in the water by British holidaymakers.

The unnamed English couple dialled 999 after making the horrifying discovery during a stroll along the seafront in the island capital Palma.

Local and port police cordoned off the area after the alarm was sounded around midday yesterday.

Emergency medical responders and court officials then arrived at the scene.

The dead woman’s identity remained a mystery this morning, nearly 24 hours after she was pulled out of the water by police divers.

Her body was spotted by a small sailing boat opposite the windmills in Palma’s historic neighbourhood of Es Jonquet.

She has been described so far only as a “young black woman” who was wearing a bathing costume.

Police sources said she was thought to have been in the water for up to four days.

And cops were also probing the possibility she could have fallen into the sea from the promenade while walking alone in the area.

The results of the post-mortem are not expected to be made public but initial reports point to there being no external signs of violence on her body.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Majorca confirmed: “An investigation into the woman’s death is ongoing.

“We have no information on her identity at this moment in time.”

The silhouette of the windmills overlooking the sea in Es Jonquet is one of the most representative images of Palma.

The mills in the old fishing district date back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
